How to beat the bulge during Menopause

Wednesday October 18th 2012 sees World Menopause Day a day dedicated to raising awareness around the menopause and the effects it can have on women.

Every woman will go through the menopause, but each experience is different.  It doesn’t happen at a particular age or last for a fixed period of time, and it can cause a variety of different symptoms, both physical and emotional. The menopause can be an unsettling time in a woman’s life, while some women go through it with no problems.

One of the most common and frustrating side effects of the menopause is weight gain. To coincide with World Menopause Day the International Menopause Society is launching a new campaign to create awareness of understanding weight gain at menopause and the implications it can have on the future health of women in the post-menopausal period.

So why is weight gain so common during the menopause? Put simply the female body produces estrogen in the ovaries until menopause. Now once women hit menopause this production shifts to the adrenal glands and FAT CELLS. As a result your body will produce more fat cells; it will then protect these fat cells meaning when you are trying to lose weight you are actually fighting your body’s own physiology. Your body will even break down protein tissue ie muscle rather than use fat for energy.

But don’t despair ladies, difficult is not the same as impossible! Although it does become harder to lose weight once you are experiencing the menopause there are a few lifestyle changes we recommend our clients at Believe & Achieve that can help shift those extra pounds.

1) Remove refined carbs, dairy and fruit from your diet

2) Relax; consider taking up yoga or walking as regular exercise

3) Sleep. Get to bed by 10.30pm at least 5 nights a week.

4) High intensity interval training will raise human growth hormone which will aid fat burning

5) Balance and detox the estrogen – two herbs that are recommend are Black cohosh and vitex
